Oswego teams battle in hometown rivalry contest


Oswego Squirt 1 forward Spencer Stepien (91) battles for the puck with Oswego Squirt 2 defenseman Joe DiBlasi as Marcus Baker looks on. Oswego Squirt 2 won the hometown Snowbelt matchup 6-5. Stepien had a hat trick in the game and Baker a goal and an assist.

In a match-up of Oswego Squirts, the Oswego Squirt 2 hockey team scored with 4:56 remaining in the third period to defeat their hometown rival Oswego 1 team 6-5 in recent Snowbelt League action.

Spencer Stepien led all scorers with a hat trick for the Oswego 1 team while Lucas Cady paced the Oswego 2 squad with a goal and two assists.  Both Oswego teams jumped out early in the first period, scoring a combined five goals between them. Oswego 1 forward Aidan Taylor scored an unassisted goal at 9:46 of the first, just seconds before Aiden Caroccio and Jack Anzalone tallied their own goals off assists from Marcus Baker and Cady for Oswego 2.

Baker would follow with his own goal at the 4:00 mark, before Stepien notched the first of his three goals to make it 3-2 Oswego 2 after one period.

The Oswego 2 team would take a commanding 5-2 lead early in the second period, when Tommy Back scored on a breakaway, and then Jack Rice found the net, off passes from Cady and Anzalone. The Oswego 1 Bucs would not go quietly, however, scoring the next three goals of the game to tie it at 5-5. Stepien slid a backhand from behind the net past goalie Hunter Lawton and then scored again from just inside the blue line at 7:44 of the third.

Oswego 1 defenseman Tyler May would score later on a breakaway goal of his own to make it five goals apiece.  The tie would be short lived, however, as Oswego 2’s Cady rushed the puck up the ice at 4:56 of the final period, scoring the game-winner past Rando.
