Three members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department were injured Wednesday afternoon by a Pennellville man wielding an axe.
At about 1:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of County Route 10 in the Town of Schroeppel on a report of a man swinging an axe at passing motorists.
When deputies arrived, they were confronted by a man who was acting erratically and swinging what appeared to be a hatchet. The man was ordered several times to drop the weapon, but failed to comply.
The man advanced aggressively towards officers and pepper spray was deployed. The man was disarmed and taken into custody.
As a result of the altercation, three deputies were injured. Sheriff’s Lieutenant E.J. Dillon received a laceration, Deputy M. Chipman suffered a broken hand, and Deputy D. Bacon injured his knee trying to control the suspect.
They were treated at area medical facilities and released. The suspect was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
The suspect has been identified as 55-year-old James E. Rogers of 14 Nottingham Runne, Pennellville.
