Westhill rolls past Phoenix football

Westhill got off to an impressive start when it took on the Phoenix varsity football team Saturday.

Westhill scored the game’s first 17 points, which helped them build a 32 point halftime lead. The deficit Phoenix faced proved to be insurmountable as Westhill came away with a 66-22 win.

Westhill wasted little time to getting in gear. They took a 7-0 lead when Carson Hicks scored on a run from three yards out. Westhill added to its lead when Chris Brusa scored on an 18-yard touchdown run. Shortly after Brusa’s score, Collin Henson gave Westhill a 17-0 lead after connecting on a 24-yard field goal attempt.

Phoenix got onto the scoreboard when Avery Chisolm threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brock Maruscsak. Before the first quarter ended, Westhill struck again when Reed Derrenbacher threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Whipple.

Any hope the Firebirds had of a rally were dashed during the second quarter.

Brusa rushed for his second touchdown of the game to give Westhill a 31-6 lead. While keeping the Firebirds off the scoreboard, Westhill scored again before the first half ended. Westhill took a 38-6 lead when a Phoenix interception was returned for a touchdown.

Westhill maintained its impressive ways as the third quarter began. Another three-yard touchdown run from Brusa gave them a 45-6 advantage. Ja’Shai Jamison scored on a run from 5 yards out to give Westhill a 52-6 lead.
