Phoenix football team falls to Port Byron, Senior Day is today

After a quarter of play, the Phoenix varsity football team trailed Port Byron by six points.

Port Byron, however, quickly turned a close game into a blowout, scoring 36 points during the second and third quarters of its 48-6 win over Phoenix.

Port Bryon took a 6-0 lead when quarterback John Kudla scored on a run from 52 yards out. Port Byron then scored on two possessions during the second quarter. Kudla found Austin Parker for a 38-yard touchdown pass to put Port Byron ahead 14-0. Later in the second quarter, Cory Abraham put Port Byron ahead 20-0 following a 45-yard touchdown run.

Port Byron maintained its effectiveness during the second half.

During the third quarter, Cormac Green scored on a run from four yards out, which put Port Byron ahead 28-0. Later in the third quarter, Port Byron made the score 34-0 when Parker intercepted a pass and returned the ball 38 yards for the score.

Before the third quarter ended, Port Byron struck again. Green scored his second touchdown of the day following a run from 23 yards out. Green’s second touchdown run put Port Byron ahead 42-0.

Port Byron added another score during the fourth quarter when Jonah Snyder returned a punt 42 yards for a touchdown.

Phoenix was able to get onto the board before the game ended. Billy Cronk scored on a run from 15 yards out.

Cronk led Phoenix with 35 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Avery Chisolm ran for 23 yards on 7 carries while quarterback Dakota Belknap tallied 8 yards on 3 carries.
