Over 100 family and friends gathered together to celebrate the 100th birthday of Gladys Rappleye Sunday Aug. 5 at the Scriba Volunteer Fire Department Hall. Rappleye was born in the town of Palermo August 4, 1912 to Carl and Edna Snyder. She has resided in Oswego most of her life.
Mrs. Rappleye was the first recording secretary for the Scriba Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary, where she is still a member. She is a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a member of The DAR. She is an active member of the First United Methodist Church.
Gladys retired from Frank G. Wells men’s clothing store after 33 years as a secretary. She resides in Oswego with her husband Stewart, where she enjoys quilting, eating at restaurants, spending time with her family and fascinating them with stories of her life.
Family members from all over New York State, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Oregon, New Hampshire, Texas, and Michigan joined her in the celebration of her century long life.
In addition to the many well wishes she received from family and friends, Mrs. Rappleye also received birthday wishes from President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama, George W. Bush, Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Patty Ritchie and Willard Scott.
