Joseph Mitchell, Purple Heart recipient

Joseph A. “Pug” Mitchell, 87, of Martville, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 after the passing of his wife of 65 years at Morningstar Residential Health Center in Oswego.

He was born in Oswego and resided in Martville since 1970.

He graduated from Oswego High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 to fight in World War II where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.

He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served in Korea and Vietnam until his retirement in 1969.

He worked at Alcan until his retirement in 1985.

During his retirement, he enjoyed playing cards and spending time outdoors.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Jean M. Mitchell, who died May 4, 2012; two brothers, William and Harold Mitchell; and a sister Wanda Gorman.

He is survived by six children, Timothy (Gail) Mitchell of Paducah, Ky., Gail (Walter) Lehmann of Hannibal, Jacqueline (Charles) Giancola of Manlius, Lynn McCormick of San Antonio, Texas, Matthew (Terri) Mitchell of Martville and Kathleen (Jeffrey) O’Brien of Fair Haven; a sister, Alma (Joseph) Castaldo of Oswego; 18 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. Calling hours and services were held Monday at Martville United Methodist Church. Burial was in Martville Cemetery.
