Preston and Fontana have royal roles in ‘Mattress’

Julia Preston-Fulton (Minstrel), Bobby Fontana (King) and Erin Chetney (Jester) rehearse a scene from “Once Upon a Mattress.” “Once Upon a Mattress” will take place in the Frances Marion Brown Theatre, Fort Ontario Arts Center in Oswego July 6, 7, 13 and 14 with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. July 15.

Oswego Players director Inez Manor Parker has cast the royal leads in her upcoming “Once Upon a Mattress.”

Bobby Fontana is reprising the role of King Sextimus the Silent.

He played the same role several years ago in a children’s theatre presentation of the show.

Fontana has been a member of the organization since his debut in “Lend Me a Tenor” in 1995.

His contributions to the group are many and varied. As a director, he has successfully taken on such classics as, “To Kill a Mocking Bird,” and “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Marsha Preston will play the nasty Queen Aggravain – thwarting her son’s (Prince Dauntless the Drab) every attempt at matrimony.

Preston is a Penn State Theatre Arts graduate and also holds a master’s degree in education.  She is a long time Players member, first performing in “Dear World” in 1988, and most recently in “Life with Father” in April.

Preston has been active with other groups such as the Red Creek Players, Fulton Broadway Theatre and Festival Chorus.

Multi-talented, she has written and produced children’s theatre with Hands on Theatre.

Talent appears to run in the family as her daughter, Julia Preston-Fulton, is also in the cast.

Fulton is a graduate of SUNY Oswego in zoology and just recently returned from tour-guiding in Yellowstone National Park.

With the Players, she assumed the role of Catherine Johnson in “Silent Night, Lonely Night” and recreated the Marlene Deitrich role from “Witness for the Prosecution.”

“Once Upon a Mattress” will take place in the Frances Marion Brown Theatre, Fort Ontario Arts Center in Oswego July 6, 7, 13 and 14 with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. July 15.

Tickets are available by calling the Players’ Box Office at 343-5138.
