The Phoenix varsity baseball team exploded for nine first-inning runs to set the stage for a 20-0 win over Fulton Tuesday afternoon.
After its nine-run first inning, Phoenix added two more runs during the bottom of the fourth inning, which made the score 11-0. The Firebirds scored nine more runs during the top of the sixth inning to make the score 20-0.
Leading the way for Phoenix was Nate Dietz, who had 3 hits and 3 RBIs, and Chris Vaverchak, who had 2 hits and 6 RBIs, including a home run.
Dakota Belknap chipped in two hits and two RBIs while Emilio Tassone added two hits and an RBI. Tyler Button and Adam Thoryk combined for two hits and two RBIs while Kyle Himes and Matt Ladd combined for three hits for Phoenix.
Adam Thoryk earned a win for Phoenix on the mound. Thoryk struck out six batters while his reliever, Emilio Tassone, struck out four batters.
