The Hannibal girls varsity basketball team gave heavily favored South Jefferson all it could handle and then some when the teams met March 2 at the Carrier Dome for the Section III Class B overall championship.

Heading into the game, many figured South Jefferson, which is undefeated, had the ability to dismantle the Lady Warriors. Instead, Hannibal was not intimated and rolled with the punches as the game went on.

When it seemed as if the game was getting away from the Lady Warriors, they rallied from 17 points down to cut South Jefferson’s lead to five points with a minute left in the game.

Unfortunately for Hannibal, time ran out on both their valiant comeback efforts and its dream season as South Jefferson escaped with a 63-56 win.

After a back and forth first quarter, Hannibal had a one-point lead. During the second quarter, South Jefferson quickly seized control of the game. By the end of the quarter, South Jefferson had outscored the Lady Warriors by 10 points to take a 26-17 lead into halftime.

Following a more competitive third quarter, South Jefferson withstood Hannibal’s efforts to respond. They outscored the Lady Warriors by five points to extend its lead to 15 points.

During the fourth quarter, South Jefferson extended its lead to 17 points but Hannibal rallied. They went on to outscore South Jefferson by seven points.

Late in the game, the Lady Warriors cut South Jefferson’s lead down to five points but time ran out on their attempt at another epic comeback and South Jefferson held on for the 7 point win.
